RWE Power AG has selected HIMA Paul Hildebrandt GmbH + Co KG to provide emergency shutdown systems (ESD) to protect hearth furnace boilers at the Fortuna-Nord plant in Bergheim (North Rhine-Westphalia), Germany. The plant manufactures lignite dust, fluidized bed lignite and hearth furnace coke.

The HIMA HIQuad safety systems installed at the Fortuna-Nord plant process a total of 800 signals in protecting boiler controllers against excessive temperatures and pressures while monitoring the water level in the drums. Other HIMA systems purchased by RWE Power AG and in use at the plant provide nonstop safety for the respective hearth furnaces and a lignite dust-grinding plant.

In addition to providing the HIQuad safety systems, HIMA also produced the application used to operate the systems, and was responsible for building and installing the switchgear cabinets. Additionally, HIMA coupled the new safety systems to the Siemens distributed control system. The inputs and outputs for safety requirements can be used up to SIL 3.

RWE Power AG Project Engineer Gregor Maron cited HIMA’s safety expertise and experience among the reasons his company choose HIMA for the ESD systems. “HIMA safety professionals speak our language and are constantly bringing their experience to the table. Over the course of a project, these specialists show themselves to be highly flexible, and they’re with us every step of the way, from planning right through to commissioning.”
