HIMA controllers for Movares’ Eurolocking installation help infrastructure provider ProRail to lower life cycle costs at Beverwijk railway yard

The commissioning of a SIL 4 interlocking at the Beverwijk railway yard in The Netherlands marks the second installation of a Movares Eurolocking system featuring HIMax® controllers from HIMA.

Today, the Eurolocking commercial off-the-shelf (COTS)-based SIL 4 interlocking from Movares controls 25 point machines and 22 signals around the Beverwijk station, about 20 kilometres from Amsterdam. Built on a HIMax system, the new Beverwijk interlocking enables the railway infrastructure provider ProRail to make its own adjustments and perform its own maintenance, lowering life cycle costs.

In 2012, the first Eurolocking solution using HIMax controllers was installed at the Santpoort Noord Yard in The Netherlands. This marked the world’s first SIL 4 PLC interlocking on a main railway line. The Beverwijk commissioning took place on April 6, 2015, and involved removing the existing relay interlocking and replacing all signals, point machines, track circuits and cabling.

HIMax controllers, certified to the highest safety level, SIL 4, in accordance with CENELEC, feature scalable redundancy and Achilles 1 certification, the highest level of cyber security. The controller platform is suitable for large and small interlocking tasks and for monitoring railway crossings and rolling stock applications.
