As part of a plant renovation in Hofu in Japan’s Yamaguchi Prefecture, Bayer CropScience chose a HIQuad safety controller for emergency shutdown (ESD). The new system provides protection from mixing-tank explosions and meets the IEC 61508 and IEC 61511 global standards as well as JIS C0508 and JIS C0511 Japanese standards.
Bayer CropScience is one of the world’s leading innovative crop science companies in the areas of seeds, crop protection and non-agricultural pest control. The company has a leading position in the Japanese crop protection market.
In 2014, Bayer CropScience`s site management in Hofu, Japan, decided to incorporate a SIS into their production plant. Today a new HIMA HIQuad H51q-MS system monitors temperatures in a mixing tank and provides emergency shutdown capabilities. The update not only gave the facility a higher level of protection during chemical mixing, it also upgraded the ESD function to IEC 61508 and IEC 61511 standards.
The selection of HIMA continues a long relationship between the two companies and reflects HIMA’s ability to help Bayer CropScience protect its operations with SIL-compliant solutions. In addition to hardware, HIMA integrated the new ESD system into the plant’s distributed control system and provided factory acceptance testing.
